School Wide Recycling Campaign Started by Quality ACT Candidate

Ms. Julianne Hughes, Lively Elementary  4th grade teacher and candidate in the Quality ACT teacher certification program, initiated a school wide recycling campaign. Students were asked to bring recyclables from home including: plastics, tin and aluminum cans, paper, and cardboard. The class is also working with the City of Irving, in order to have services provided for pick-up of the materials.

Twice a week, Ms. Hughes’ class will go into the classrooms and weigh each class' bags of recycled materials. At the end of the six weeks, the class with the most weight in pounds of recycled materials will win a pizza party. Ms. Hughes is taking all plastic bottles and soda cans to a center to earn points towards free school supplies for our school. Not only will this be a learning experience, but it is also community service, and helps our environment and our school. Students will be required to keep up with the data and keep the school updated about the contest.

So far, the campaign has collected over 900 lbs. of recyclable materials.

Quote from Lively Elementary Principal (February 2012):
"We are SOOOOOO proud of Julianne.  She has done a phenomenal job initiating and leading this school wide effort!  Lively Elementary is lucky to have her as a teacher!"
